Musick has Charms to soothe a savage Breast,
To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak.
William Congreve, The Mourning Bride, 1697
Music is a universal human phenomenon. Just about every culture indulges in some form of music: it can unite or divide us, it can inspire us or move us to tears of joy or rage, it can soothe and placate us. There is something visceral about music’s ability to grab us deep in the hind-brain and force our attention.
A life without music would be dull indeed.
