I created this project for exhibition at the Altrincham Arts Festival in October 2013. The thumbnail grid above reproduces the form of the display.
I wanted this exhibition to show my view of the area in which I live. Suburbia as a concept carries a lot of baggage, much of it derived from twee 70s sitcoms. There is a feeling of comfortable perfection around the idea; of leafy avenues, pristine lawns and neatly trimmed hedges.
But beyond that ideal is a world of necessary services, refuse collections, road furniture, wear and tear and the repair work that goes with it. I wanted to present a picture that encompassed all the reality of this area, not just the parts that feed the illusion.
